cycling in new york
Why is it that people have been literally throwing themselves in front of me as I bike down the street? I'm not even talking about when I have a red light. I respect the pedestrian... most of the time. I'm talking about flying down 7th avenue (which might suck even more than 6th. I haven't made up my mind), trying to make all the lights, watching out for taxis stopping on both sides of the street to pick up passangers, and having some shmuck look me in the eye and walk rapidly across the street, directly in front of me.Around Penn Station after work is the worst. I understand that it's summer and everyone is itching to get out of the office, including myself. Why do you think I'm riding home so fast? It seems that people going to Penn Station have got it, bad. They walk against the light in droves, essentially blocking access to all traffic. I should ride with a whistle in my mouth, like I've seen some people, so I can rudely signal for them to get the hell out of my way.
I think the worst encounter I have had by far was riding down west 3rd street in the rain. It was my light, and I was going at a normal speed, when a man decided to cross the empty street, holding his two children by the hand, right in front of me. Thank god I had gotten my break fixed, because I had to hit it fast. The result: I skidded and almost fell, and vaguely detected a dirty look that HE had given ME while completing his jaywalk.
Oh yeah, the street was completely devoid of cars. I guess he couldn't wait.
